How is it that experts are able to make faster and better decisions than novices? What are the cues that they look out for? How can we identify what special knowledge experts and very experienced people have, so that we can transfer it to other staff? Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) is a term that describes a suite of tools and methods for identifying, understanding and representing what experts know. Practical applications of these techniques were pioneered by Dr Gary Klein of Klein Associates (now Applied Research Associates).
